SUCCESS STORY I Rahul Lal Kiran, Ravenshaw University
What Happens When Talent Meets Opportunity: Rahul Lal Kiran's Journey into FinTech
How a B.A. Economics graduate from Ravenshaw University became the first student from BharatNetra's inaugural CFI cohort to land a full-time role — and why 63 others are close behind.
One hour before a university exam, Rahul Lal Kiran's phone was about to die. His friend had just told him about a FinTech programme he needed to apply to — right then, immediately. Battery draining, Rahul typed out his application on his phone.
That fortuitous moment changed everything.
A Curious Mind Interested in Economics
Rahul grew up in Odisha, drawn to economics and finance — not just as theory, but as a lens for solving real-world problems. He chose Ravenshaw University for his B.A. Economics Honours, because he wanted to understand the why behind markets and money.
But he quickly sensed the gap between classroom theory and practical application. "I was curious about economics and finance," he recalls. "FinTech was an interesting area — and I was also drawn to technology and AI."
He just needed a bridge.
The Programme That Changed His Trajectory
That last-minute phone application was for the Certificate in FinTech and Insurtech (CFI) Programme — a flagship initiative by the Government of Odisha under the BharatNetra ecosystem, jointly delivered by the Global Finance & Technology Network (GFTN) and the National University of Singapore's Asian Institute of Digital Finance, as part of the Integrated Global Financial Technology Capability Hub (I-GFTCH) in Bhubaneswar.
Rahul entered the programme with no prior experience in FinTech. What he brought instead was curiosity, determination, and a willingness to learn.
What he found exceeded his expectations.
"The faculty from NUS coming to Odisha — interacting with them was a highlight," he says. "The study and the skills were unmatchable. We were doing theory in the morning and solving real-world industry problems in the evening. The immersion, the atmosphere, the discipline of full-day learning — it gave me the power to build."
His team went on to win Third Place in the Capstone Project, collaborating with Razorpay to tackle real-world FinTech challenges. Through the programme, he developed industry-relevant fintech capabilities, gained exposure to global best practices, and connected with a growing ecosystem of innovators, employers, and industry leaders.
Walking Into the Black Swan Summit
The Black Swan Summit 2026 was unlike anything Rahul had experienced. Government leaders, startup founders, and global investors filled the room. On the final day, Rahul's cohort received their CFI certificates — on stage, in front of dignitaries.
"I was very nervous," he admits. "But getting the certificate there, at the centre of it all — it built my confidence. My understanding of FinTech and AI helped me in interviews. I had something real to show."
At the Summit's Job Fair, Rahul interviewed with Vayana, one of India's leading trade finance platforms. He landed an internship offer in a new city, requiring him to move far from his hometown and support himself.
He took it.
Three Months That Proved Everything
The internship wasn't easy. Navigating FinTech's complex regulatory landscape was, by Rahul's own account, the hardest thing he faced — but also his greatest learning. He focused on his work, kept building his skills, and didn't wait for recognition to find him.
It found him anyway.
His internship was converted to a paid internship in recognition of his performance and three months later, Vayana invited him to their Pune office for a full-time interview.
He got the job.
The First. Of Many.
Rahul Lal Kiran — B.A. Economics, no prior FinTech experience, Ravenshaw University — is now an Analyst at Vayana, hired into a technical function.
He is a graduate from Cohort 1 of the CFI Programme. And he is the first student from that cohort to secure a full-time role through the BharatNetra pathway.
He will not be the last. Today, 63 other students from Cohort 1 are undertaking internships across the ecosystem.
Rahul recently also had the opportunity to share his story directly with Minister Suryabanshi Suraj, Odisha's Higher Education Minister — a moment Rahul describes as a dream come true.
His Message to Students Across Odisha
Rahul's advice to other students is direct and forward-looking:
"AI is in the air all the time — it is not a problem for us, it is an enabler. No matter what subject you pursue, you need to have exposure to technology and AI. It improves solutions in whatever sector you are in. And whatever you do — be good at it. Focus on your skill, your work. Opportunities come when you deserve them."
A Vision Made Real
Rahul's story is the story BharatNetra was built to tell.
Talent exists everywhere. Opportunity does not always. When the two are connected, remarkable things happen.
The BharatNetra Initiative — a strategic partnership between the Government of Odisha and Singapore-based GFTN, anchored at the I-GFTCH in Bhubaneswar — is designed to position Odisha at the forefront of India's digital economy. Through four strategic pillars of Global Learning, Global Mindshare, Global Innovation, and the Global Capability Centre, it is building globally competitive talent from Odisha and connecting them with meaningful opportunities in financial technology.
Rahul Lal Kiran is proof of that model. He is Cohort 1. He is the first.
He will not be the last.
