From Balangir to the Podium: How a Certificate Became a Bridge to the World

Global Learning

A capacity-building initiative designed to empower young talent with world-class knowledge, practical skills, and global exposure in FinTech and InsurTech.

IMPACT STORY I Aakash Khamari, Rajendra University, Balangir

I didn’t expect a classroom to feel like a bridge.

Coming from Balangir, a district in western Odisha, I always knew that ambition existed everywhere, but opportunity didn't. For a student like me, the world of global FinTech often felt like a distant planet—visible, but out of reach. The biggest hurdle wasn't a lack of motivation; it was a lack of a map. I had the hunger to learn, but I had no one to guide me on where to start.

To be honest, when my HoD first shared the brochure for the NUS-AIDF Certificate in FinTech & Insurtech (CFI) program, I almost scrolled past it. I thought it was just another generic course. I didn't realize then that I was looking at the opportunity that would change my career.

 The Test of Resilience

My journey almost ended before it began. When the initial selection results came out, I was cut. Watching my peers get selected while I stayed behind was frustrating, disappointing, and—I admit—a little heartbreaking. But when I was selected in the second round, those emotions turned into pure determination. I realized then that I had been given a second chance, and I wasn't going to waste it. I walked into the program as a Computer Science student from Rajendra University.

Before this course, I lived in a world of syntax and logic. Success meant the code compiled and the output was correct. But the CFI course pulled me out of the IDE and into the real economy. I remember the specific shift when I realized that a variable in my code wasn't just a container for a number—it was a representation of someone's livelihood, or a strict regulatory limit that could shut down a business if mishandled. The course bridged the gap between "building code" and "building solutions." I moved from just understanding algorithms to understanding architecture—learning that you cannot build a lending app without understanding risk, and you cannot architect a payment system without respecting the settlement cycle. I stopped asking "does it run?" and started asking "does it work for the user.

 From Silence to Confidence

The transition from online modules to the in-person immersion at SDI Bhubaneswar, under the BharatNetra initiative, marked a turning point. It was here that "access met intent."

However, my biggest transformation wasn't just academic. In the beginning, I was hesitant. I cared too much about what people thought of me, often holding back my questions for fear of boring or disturbing the mentors. That changed because of the people who taught us. Ms. Elaine Sor and Ms. Amy were always ready to help, regardless of the problem's complexity. Their patience taught  me that in a room full of experts, the only wrong thing to do is stay silent. I stopped thinking only in terms of code and started thinking about responsibility, compliance, and inclusion. Mr. Sopnendu Mohanty gave us a lesson that grounded all of this. He told us: "To be lucky means getting prepared to be lucky." That sentence stuck with me. I learned that innovation isn't just about being the smartest person in the room; it's about being the most persistent.

The Capstone: Settle X

The true test of this mindset was our Capstone Project: Settle X. Championed by Mr. Swaminathan Ravikumar and based on a live industry problem statement from Razorpay, we took on a massive challenge: dismantling the "SME Trade Tax." We realized that a small exporter in Odisha pays up to 3% in fees and waits 5 days for their money, while big corporations pay pennies and get instant settlements. That inequality was our problem statement. But here is what the certificate doesn't tell you: We failed. Multiple times. The path wasn't linear; it was messy. There was a moment where I was genuinely panicked. I was obsessing over the financials, thinking, "How will this startup survive? How do we make money from Day 1?" I felt like if we didn't have an immediate revenue model, we were failing. I took this fear to Prof. Chia. I expected a lecture on profit margins. Instead, he stopped me and said, "Aakash, any startup that thinks of earning money from the get-go is bound to fail. Forget earning money in the first five years. Focus on scaling and growth. Build a perfect solution first. It was like a weight lifted off my shoulders. We completely pivoted. We stopped trying to build a cash register and started building a growth engine. We engineered a solution based on a radical idea: decoupling the movement of money from the movement of compliance data.

-  The Compliance Shield: We built a Layer 1 system that automated regulatory checks (FEMA/AML) instantly via APIs.

-  The Liquidity Layer: Instead of sending money transaction-by-transaction, we aggregated small SME payments into massive "Wholesale Blocks." This allowed us to access the GIFT City FCSS (Foreign Currency Settlement System) and secure institutional exchange rates usually reserved for banks.

- The Golden Rail: We utilized a direct internal book transfer via DBS Bank to move these funds instantly to Singapore, completely bypassing the expensive SWIFT network.

The result? We engineered a solution capable of reducing transaction costs by 90% and compressing settlement time from T+5 to T+1.

A Victory for the Team

None of this would have been possible without Team Finverse. Shivajee Nayak, Rahul Lal Kiran, Swagat Jena, Satwika Nanda, Sunayana Bakshi, Soumya Shree Sahoo, Rashmi Gartia, Aishwarya Prasad, and Papun Dishri—you weren't just teammates; you were my backbone.

Securing 3rd place amidst 25+ teams and over 300 participants was a validation of our grit. But the recognition wasn't the real prize. The transformation was.

The Bridge Forward

I am leaving this course with clarity—clarity about the kind of engineer I want to become, and the understanding that access, when given with intent, can change trajectories.

To the Government of Odisha, the team at GFTN, NUS-AIDF professors and the team of SDI Bhubaneswar:  Thank you for building this bridge. You didn't just give us a certificate. You gave us the  confidence to believe that a student from Balangir can build solutions for the world.

The journey continues. We’re just getting started.
